Sitting Volleyball

Sitting volleyball, governed by World ParaVolley (WPV), is a dynamic adaptation of volleyball for athletes with disabilities, played seated on the floor. Originating in the Netherlands in 1956 as a rehabilitation sport, it debuted at the 1976 Paralympics and expanded to women’s events in 2004. With a smaller court and lower net, it emphasizes agility and strategy. In India, sitting volleyball is gaining traction, with the Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) and Volleyball Federation of India (VFI) training 500+ athletes, aiming for the 2028 Paralympics after a bronze at the 2023 Asian Para Games.

History

Sitting volleyball emerged in 1956, blending volleyball with German sitzball for injured soldiers. First showcased internationally in 1958, it became a Paralympic medal sport in 1980 (men) and 2004 (women). VolleySLIDE, founded in 2012, boosted global outreach. India’s journey began in 2010, with the PCI forming a national team in 2015. The 2024 National Championships in Bengaluru saw 300+ players, a 25% increase from 2023.

Rules and Court

  • Court: 10x6m, with a 2m attack line; net at 1.15m (men), 1.05m (women).
  • Rules: Players must keep one buttock on the floor during ball contact; blocking serves is allowed. Matches are best-of-5 sets to 25 points (15 for the fifth).
  • Skills: Includes aces, blocks, spikes, and digs; key terms like “kill” and “joust” apply.

India’s VFI standardized courts in 2024, with 50+ venues meeting WPV specs.

Classifications

  • VS1: Severe impairments (e.g., spinal injuries, amputations); complete loss of joint strength/flexibility.
  • VS2: Partial impairments (e.g., cerebral palsy); limited strength/flexibility. Max 2 VS2 players per team for fairness.

India’s PCI classified 100+ athletes in 2024; 70% are VS1, led by players like Anil Kumar (VS1).

  • Paralympics: Since 1980 (men), 2004 (women); Iran (men) and China (women) lead. 2024 Paris had 8 teams per gender.
  • World Championships: Biennial; Iran (men, 8 golds) and Netherlands (women, 4 golds) dominate. 2022 Sarajevo saw Brazil’s women win.
  • Asian Para Games: India won bronze in 2023 (men); China tops.
  • Nationals: India’s 2024 Bengaluru event qualified 20 for 2025 Asia-Oceania Championships.

India’s Anil Kumar led the men’s team to 2023 Asian bronze; 2025 Hangzhou Worlds target top 5.

Equipment

  • Court: Hardwood or synthetic, 10x6m.
  • Net: Adjustable to 1.15m/1.05m.
